Visit To Lanternside

On Sunday 28th July we were invited to a return visit to Lanternside the home of Gill and Julian Philipson in the lovely Coquet Valley.
We started with a visit to see their two horses which are sometimes used to haul timber out of the woods. We saw Gills Shetland cow Pepsi with her fine bull calf at foot. The Shetland milk is used to make butter and soft cheese by Gill.
A walk to the vegetable garden was next, new cages had been erected to protect the masses of rasps and many other soft fruits but Julian said his bees had been disappointing in 2002 owing to the wet start to the year.
A walk round the holding then followed taking in an area of former woodland that they had felled and was awaiting replanting.
On our return to the house we had a marvellous pool tea in the garden after which we went home and Julian went off to gather some hay bales as the forecast was not too good.
Everyone agreed that it had been an enjoyable afternoon and our thanks go to Gill and Julian for a great visit.
